Today we are reviewing one of the most popular of the medium range gas powered log splitters on the market, the Champion Power Equipment No.90720. Champion Power Equipment have a great range of log splitters, and this is one of our favourites. Sitting right in between the smaller electric log splitters for more casual use, and the large gas powered behemoths, the Champion No.90720 has a sprightly 80cc OHV engine that provides a very reasonable 7 tons of power.
Weighing in at a modest 145lbs, this is the perfect machine for those who split logs regularly and have logs of a decent size that can’t be accommodated by a smaller unit, but still need the convenience of being able to move and store their splitter relatively easily.
Features:
- 7 Ton Performance, 3″ x 17.7″ hydraulic cylinder, 20 second cycle time
- Powered by Champion 80cc OHV Engine with Cast Iron Sleeve
- 2 Stage Hydraulic pump – 3 GPM – 3000 maximum psi
- Can accommodate logs up to 19.7″ in length, up to 80 lbs
- 1 Year Limited Warranty
Pros:
- Assembly is very easy, and shouldn’t take most people more than 20-30 minutes to get the splitter operational
- The manual is refreshingly easy to understand, and very helpful for the assembly as mentioned above. It also contains the part number of the engine and the required spark plug when it needs replacing.
- Considerably lighter, easier to manoeuvre and store compared to similar powered splitters
- Splits through almost any log thrown at it, and managed several large hardwood logs we tried with ease
- Log cradle can accommodate logs up to 20 inches long and 80lbs in weight, and when combined with a 20 second cycle time makes for very efficient work
Cons
- While the 7 ton of splitting force is perfect for most users, if you are needing a machine for commercial purposes we would recommend it 22 ton older brother the Champion Power Equipment No.92221
Summary:
This is a fantastic mid-range log splitter and highly recommended to anyone needing to split a considerable abount of wood, but a commercial machine is not necessary. One final tip would be to purchase a quart of 10W30 motor oil and 2 gallons of hydraulic oil along with the Champion Power Equipment No.90720 so you are ready to work out of the box
